Heraklion Airport

Heraklion Airport, also known as Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport named after the Greek philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis, was established in 1939 by the Greek Government. Its operation has been continuous except during World War II, when civilian service was halted at the airport and resumed in 1946. In the preceding years, storm lamps were used to light the runway, 3 tents were used as buildings and wind direction determination for landing planes was provided by burning dry grass and creating smoke. The entire airport was updated in 1971 with the buildings currently on-site.
Heraklion Airport is located on the Island of Crete, a common tourist destination southeast of Greece in the Mediterranean Sea. The airport is approximately 5km outside of Heraklion in the small municipality of Nea Alikarnassos on the north side of Crete. As of 2011, an alternative airport is being constructed at Kastelli Pediados to handle the large volume of travelers, at which point the Heraklion airport will cease operations.
The second largest airport in Greece, Heraklion Airport provides primarily international European and regional flights into Greece and is used by over 60 airline companies, many of which provide seasonal routes to Heraklion. Over the past decades, passenger travel to Crete has increased drastically, and the airport has serviced over 5,000,000 passengers and almost 45,000 aircraft.
Domestic flights within the country of Greece are provided by Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air only.
